Ebola Outbreak: 250 Dead, 1,000 Infected
A dangerous outbreak of the extremely rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola in the DR Congo and Uganda has claimed close to 250 lives and infected more than 1,000 people, leading experts to worry about the possibility of it replicating the terrible West Africa 2014-16 outbreak which claimed more than 11,000 lives. Since the present vaccine is effective only on the Zaire strain, there is an urgent need to develop new vaccines by three organizations—International Aids Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), Moderna, and the University of Oxford—funded by CEPI using different methods to fight against the Bundibugyo glycoprotein. This development comes amid fears that the spread of the disease due to conflicts and lack of health facilities may make containing it extremely difficult.
